Mentor Training

At Cherished, we are blessed to have a passionate team of volunteers who give up a couple of hours each week to mentor a Cherished girl.

Here's how a mentoring session works:

  • Always private and confidential* between the mentor and mentee

  • One-to-one with personalised activities to suit individual needs

  • Usually 1 hour long but this is flexible

  • A mix of hands-on activities, creative challenges and discussion

Helping to shape the future of a young person is no easy task.

Volunteering to go to a school and walk into a room with a girl you have never met before, who may have complicated needs and is relying on you to provide stability, takes some guts.

To ensure all Cherished mentors are equipped to provide meaningful mentoring, we run regular 'Cherish the Moment' training sessions, across 2 days, for new volunteers interested in mentoring.

Session 1

  • Role of a Mentor

  • Attachment Theory

  • Trauma and the Brain

  • Managing Behaviour

  • Confidentiality

Session 2

The training is in accordance with the Mentoring and Befriending Association and is certificated upon completion.

Don't Panic!

Once trained, we don't just leave you to it! Mentors are supported with supervision meetings every 6 weeks and regular drop-ins to pick up tips and share resources with other mentors.

If you think you could make a difference mentoring, complete our volunteer application form and email it to us. Join the team!

Safeguarding

Every Cherished volunteer is DBS checked before proceeding towards becoming a mentor. We carefully select our Cherished mentors, as we believe their work is crucial in the positive development of a young person.

*At the start of every mentoring relationship, we agree with the mentee that if they disclose information that leads us to believe they or someone else may be at risk of harm, we will need to pass this on to a senior member of staff.

Mentoring

We all need somebody in our lives to look up to, share our problems with and celebrate in our successes.

Cherished mentors are committed volunteers who believe having a special person to provide this support is essential for the personal growth and wellbeing of young women.

At the end of the Cherished course, each girl from the group is paired with one of our dedicated, trained mentors. For the next 12 weeks, these one-to-one sessions are a safe space for a Cherished girl to explore her feelings, build her character and put in place the foundations for her future.

Cherished mentoring consistently proves to be invaluable. Having someone to listen, support and encourage empowers girls to believe in themselves.

Mentoring is ongoing, giving each girl the time they need to realise their own worth and have the confidence to make positive choices without feeling pressured by the values of the world around them.

“Mentoring is the cultivation of young adults, the tender caring for and nurturing of them so that they will grow, flourish, and be fruitful.” ― Jeff Myers
